Lynden

Established in 1874 Lynden is now Whatcom Counties’ second-largest city.

History

Lyden was originally home to members of the Nooksack Tribe before non-Indian settlers arrived in the 1860s. The community slowly grew until the 1880s when a school was built, stores opened and the city was platted.

Slowly but surely a small trickle of Dutch Citizens moved to the area, attracted by its suitable farming conditions. Soon the prevailing class was Dutch, making up nearly 50% of the population. Lynden today is known for its charming Dutch ambiance and is still home to Washington’s largest dutch community.
